MEANING OF DATA PROCESSING

Data processing is the process that convert data into information by the computers or any other electronic devices.

The process is automated that runs on computers and other information systems.

Data processing coverts raw data collected, filtered, sorted, processed, analyzed, stored, and then produced usable and desired form.

TYPES OF DATA PROCESSING

The types of data processing are as follows:

1. Batch Processing

2. Real – time Processing

3. Online Processing

4. Multiprocessing

5. Time-sharing

DEFINITION WITH APPROPRIATE EXAMPLES

1. BATCH PROCESSING

Batch data processing is the type of data processing that collect and process large volume of data all at once.

For examples,

  • Payroll
  • Line item invoices
  • Supply chain
  • Transactions of credit cards
  • Generation of bills
  • Processing of input and output in the operating system, etc.

2. REAL – TIME PROCESSING

Real – time data processing is the type of data processing that collect and process within seconds when the input is given.

For examples,

  • ATMs
  • Air traffic control
  • Anti-lock braking systems in your car, etc.

3. ONLINE PROCESSING

Online data processing is the types of data processing that collect and process automatic as soon as data becomes available.

A good example of online processing is bar code scanning.

4. MULTIPROCESSING

Multiprocessing is the type of data processing that is capable of multitask at a time or simultaneously.

It executes and processes more than one data at the same time

A good example of multiprocessing is weather forecasting

5. TIME – SHARING

Time sharing data processing is the type of data processing that allocates resources and data in time to several computer users.

METHODS OF COLLECTING DATA

There are 3 main data processing methods:

1. Manual

2. Mechanical

3. Electronic

1. MANUAL DATA PROCESSING

Manual data processing is the method of process of collecting, filtering, sorting, processing, analyzing, storing and producing data by human without the use any electronic device or automation software.

It is a low cost method to data processing and requires little or no tools.

The human errors are high and consume lots of time.

2. MECHANICAL DATA PROCESSING

Mechanical data processing is the method of process of collecting, filtering, sorting, processing, analyzing, storing and producing data using simple devices and machines such as calculators, typewriters, printing press, etc.

It produces less errors than manual and save little more time.

3. ELECTRONIC DATA PROCESSING

Electronic data processing is the method of processing data using modern technology, software and programs.

This method is the most fastest, reliable, accurate and very expensive.

USES OF DATA PROCESSING

The uses of data processing are as follows:

1. It is used for large amounts of data such payroll.

2. It used for small amounts of data such such money withdrawn from ATM.

3. It is used for scanning data such as barcode.

4. It is used to process large data at a time.

5. It is used for forecasting weather.

6. It is used for controlling air traffic.

7. It is used for sorting and arranging data.

8. It is used for reducing large data to its main points.

9. It used for compiling multi data.

10. It is used for summarizing computed data.

11. It is used for classifying data into different categories.

12. It is used for collecting, organizing, analysing, interpreting and presenting data.

13. It used for validating data correctly.
